The Receiver itself doesn’t really do anything. The idea behind Receiver was and still is, that it functions as a container, or placeholder to hold all other Citrix client software providing administrators with a central point of management. As Citrix added more products and capabilities to their portfolio (and thus more clients to install and manage) the name slowly evolved from ICA Client to Citrix Receiver (with a lot of steps in between), as we know it today. While first introduced by Citrix at Synergy back in 2009, the Citrix Receiver was formerly known as the ‘ICA Client’.
